Picking out the best two-way radio can often be a challenge if you’ve never tried out any of the models available. To make the process easier for you, we’ve gone ahead and reviewed the AT-778UV from AnyTone, which is one of our favorite products in its class.
To give you the fullest idea of what to expect, we’ll outline this radio’s features, and then we’ll cover what we liked about it as well as what we didn’t.
AnyTone AT-778UV Features
One of the first things that you’ll notice about this radio is that it’s a lot more compact than a lot of other products in the same price range, meaning that you can fit it almost anywhere. If you want to mount it in a car or truck without too much room inside of it, you shouldn’t have any problems getting it to fit.
Unlike other micro class radios, this one features a variety of extra features, as well as the basics like UHF and VHF functionality. The VHR range of this radio is between 136 and 174 MHz, while the UHF frequencies range from 400 to 480 MHz.
You can also toggle between three different power levels, ranging from 5W through to 15W, all the way up to a maximum of 25W. While this may not exactly be a long-range two-way radio, the 25W setting gives you sufficient power for simplex exchanges at longer distances.
We were surprised by the audio output of this radio, as it’s a lot clearer than some of the competing products in the same price range.
The LCD screen also impressed us due to its clarity and how everything is outlined clearly so that you can see the frequency and other details at a glance. The front panel features six buttons which can be personalized, letting you access the function that you use most frequently.
The microphone is a little bulky, but that’s because it comes equipped with a range of buttons, including an A/B band toggle and much more. As a bonus, the buttons on the microphone feature backlighting so that you can see what you’re doing in the dark.
The setup is also relatively simple since this radio comes included with a mobile mounting bracket that will allow you to secure it to the interior of a vehicle with ease. The built-in fan ensures that the radio remains cool, even during extended use, and we’ve yet to see it get uncomfortably hot.
Anytone At 778uv Review
Pros
This radio is ideally suited for use in a vehicle due to its small size and the highly visible LCD panel that provides you with all of the info that you need without having to analyze it carefully. Despite its relatively low power, this model can also keep you in contact at distances of up to 35 miles.
We also loved the value for money that you get out of this radio, as you’ll be hard-pressed to find a competitor that can match it in its price range. The relatively loud speaker also ensures that this radio is an excellent choice for use in noisy environments so that you don’t miss a transmission.
On the other end, the lack of distortion in the microphone (less than 5%) means that you’ll also be heard as clearly as possible.
Cons
One of the main issues that we had with this radio was that it is a lot harder to get used to than some of the competing models. It’s unnecessarily complicated, and the instructions don’t help too much, as they’re more cryptic than we would have preferred. If you’re a beginner, this may not be the best choice.
The squelch on this radio is also a lot looser than on other products, and you can’t adjust it beyond the existing settings out of the box. Finally, finding the software for this radio is more of a challenge than it should be, and we can’t imagine why it isn’t prominently displayed on the AnyTone site. However, there are a ton of Anytone AT-778UV accessories available.
Conclusion
Despite a few flaws, the AT-778UV is the best compact two-way radio that you’ll find in its price range. This model comes equipped with extra features that we wouldn’t have dreamed of seeing on such an affordable product, including a full-color LCD screen and backlit buttons on the mic.
